New Insights into Core–Collapse Supernova Theory

چکیده

Though it is agreed that the post–bounce, pre–explosion cores of massive stars are unstable to transonic, Rayleigh–Taylor–like instabilities, the role convective motions may play in igniting the supernova explosion itself is not yet clear. Whatever that role, the morphology and nucleosynthetic yields of the explosion, the recoil of the protoneutron star, the spatial distribution of fresh Ni, and the gravitational wave and neutrino signatures of the event will be affected in interesting ways. I review a subset of the issues raised by the new paradigm and some of the technical obstacles that remain. I focus on neutrino transfer, the role of progenitor structure, kick mechanisms, and the location and potential consequence of various hydrodynamic instabilities.

A Critique of Core–collapse Supernova Theory circa 1997

There has been a new infusion of ideas in the study of the mechanism and early character of core–collapse supernovae. However, despite recent conceptual and computational progress, fundamental questions remain. In this all–too–brief contribution , I summarize some of the interesting insights achieved over the last few years. In the process, I highlight as–yet unsolved aspects of supernova theor...

NEUTRINO-MATTER INTERACTION RATES IN SUPERNOVAE The Essential Microphysics of Core Collapse

Neutrino-matter interaction rates are central to the core collapse phenomenon and, perhaps, to the viability of the mechanism of core-collapse supernova explosions. In this paper we catalog and discuss the major neutrino scattering, absorption, and production processes that together influence the outcome of core collapse and the cooling of protoneutron stars. These are the essential inputs into...

Towards a Synthesis of Core-Collapse Supernova Theory

New insights into the mechanism and character of core–collapse supernova explosions are transforming the approach of theorists to their subject. The universal realization that the direct hydrodynamic mechanism does not work and that a variety of hydrodynamic instabilities can influence the viability of theoretical explosions has ushered in a new era in supernova modeling. In this paper, I discu...

Core-collapse Supernova Mechanism -importance of Rotation

An attempt is made to assess the significance of rotation in the core-collapse supernova phenomenon, from both observational and theoretical point of view. The data on supernovae particularly indicative of the role of rotation in the collapse-triggered explosion is emphasized. The problem of including the rotation of presupernova core into the supernova theory is considered. A two-dimensional c...

R-Process Nucleosynthesis in Core-Collapse Supernova Explosion

We study the r-process nucleosynthesis in neutrino-driven winds of gravitational core collapse SNeII. Appropriate physical conditions are found for successful r-process nucleosynthesis, which meet with several features of heavy elements discovered recently in metal-deficient halo stars. We find also several difficulties which are not explained in the present wind models. We discuss quests for n...
